PKAL Summit & MnSCU Meeting: Engaging with Pedagogies of Engagement & Pedagogical Pioneers

At the 2008 PKAL Summit and MnSCU meeting, participants had a once-in-a life-time opportunity for extended conversations with those whose pioneering pedagogical reforms are transforming the undergraduate STEM learning environment. In addition, Summit participants (pioneers and representatives of PKAL collaborating partners) edited and refined What Works: Pedagogies of Engagement, A Handbook for Undergraduate STEM Educators and discussed the next stage of reform and the thrust of the NSF proposal to be submitted in January 2009.

  • The Draft PKAL Guide to Pedagogies of Engagement, the SERC website, and the future of the collaborative partnership
  • Beginning and taking next steps to advance pedagogies of engagement
  • The role of questions within the portfolio of pedagogies of engagement
  • How contemporary technologies support pedagogies of engagement
  • The connection between questions and learning theory
  • The process of building effective pedagogical teams through the lens of both student teams and institutional leadership teams
  • The roles and responsibilities to promote and support faculty leaders shaping pedagogical approaches that engage STEM students more fully
  • Considerations in designing STEM facilities to facilitate learning & STEM facilities
  • Building STEM networks between K-12, higher education, and industry
