PKAL Florida Regional Meeting

February 2 - 3, 2007

An invitation to all Florida PKAL faculty and administrators:

Please make plans to connect and collaborate with fellow PKAL LI and F21 members at the first PKAL meeting planned by and for Florida’s college and university faculty and administrators. The host for the conference is the Whitaker Center at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, FL.

Meeting Goals

STEM education is challenged by numerous problems nationwide, yet presumably there are unique issues or priorities for public education in the state of Florida. The purpose of this regional PKAL conference will be to: (1) identify those challenges, (2) prioritize them, (3) identify successful strategies used system-wide across universities, and, most importantly, (4) develop collaborative, multi-university initiatives to address one or more of the greatest priority challenges.

Meeting Overview

The dinner scheduled for Friday evening, February 2 will welcome PKAL participants and showcase FGCU Whitaker Center’s initiatives, some successful – some less so, dedicated to STEM education. Dinner is in the Ibis room at the Embassy Suites Hotel and starts at 6:00 pm.

Following breakfast at the hotel on Saturday morning, the event moves to the Whitaker Hall at FGCU where participating universities will be asked to make short presentations (15 minutes, allowing questions and answers) outlining one of their STEM successes and introducing two of their greatest challenges. Informal presentations are welcome, though a computer, permitting PowerPoint presentations and internet access, and a document camera will be available. The morning will conclude with a listing, discussion, and prioritization of the introduced challenges. Discussion sessions Saturday afternoon will be used to develop action plans to address a select number of highest priority challenges with the intention of outlining collaborative, multi-university proposals for STEM initiatives. The event concludes at 4:00 pm
