James Baird, FAIA, is a Design Principal at Holabird and Root. He has extensive experience in the planning and design of complex academic projects. Many of his projects have received prestigious awards for design excellence from professional organizations such as the national and local chapters of the American Institute of Architects. He received both his Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Architectural Science from University of Illinois at Urbana.

Mr. Baird is Holabird & Root's science building design specialist as well as an active consultant with Project Kaleidoscope. He has developed a strong reputation for academic design based on his skill in addressing the goals of the institution and the technical requirements of a project, while also recognizing the importance of social interaction on an academic campus.

Creating Spaces that Support Active Hands-on Investigation
James Baird, a principal at Holabird & Root, poses and explores four questions regarding research space and the planning to build these spaces. Through the proper use of appropriate technology, group learning across disciplines can be attained. Looking at common spaces, classrooms and laboratories he shows how the room will vary according to the purpose. The space should serve the user and allow for future flexibility.
